Kom dus vanaf 20.30 uur langs! Meer info hier.

awkward i feat. Nikimuzieku Dutch music meets Indonesian music

Hailed by music critics as “one of Western Europe’s brightest new lights,” Dutch singer and songwriter Djurre de Haan and his band awkward i, will be part of a unique cross-cultural collaboration that will take place in Indonesia this month.

Organized by the Dutch cultural center Erasmus Huis, awkward i will embark on a tour to Semarang, Jakarta and Bogor, accompanied for each show by Indonesian gamelan orchestra Nikimuzieku.

The orchestra consists of students of the Soegijapranata Catholic University, Semarang, who are on a mission to keep Indonesian traditions — like wayang and gamelan — alive by making the arts more attractive to the younger generation. The students organize collaborations with contemporary musicians and traditional music groups from other countries, including Taiko drum players from Japan.

Staying true to this concept, Nikimuzieku’s joint tour with awkward i seems like a natural choice. De Haan, who comes from Groningen in the northern part of the Netherlands, began his music career as a bass player in the band Alamo Race Track and Hospital Bombers, before releasing his first solo album “I Really Should Whisper” under the moniker awkward i in 2009.

His debut was an instant success in the Netherlands, as he presented a fresh sound that combines meaningful lyrics with melodic depth, resulting in melancholy songs that leave a lasting impression. His sophomore effort “Everything On Wheels” followed two years later, but de Haan wasn’t flying solo anymore — his one-man project had grown into a full band and was lauded by critics and fans.

“This singer-songwriter doesn’t whisper anymore, which is good, as each single note of ‘Everything On Wheels’ must be heard,” one Dutch music critic wrote.

In addition to the release of two successful albums, awkward i is also known for mesmerizing live performances. It is here that de Haan has the possibility to show his true talent: he proves to be versatile, as he owns the stage at all times — be it solo, accompanied only by his guitar or backed by his entire band.

For this tour, a couple of songs from awkward i’s second album have been altered and made suitable for accompaniment by a gamelan orchestra, so the concerts will bring together Dutch and Indonesian cultures through music.

The tour will begin on Friday in Semarang, Nikimuzieku’s home town, and continue to Jakarta and Bogor on Jan. 21 and 23, respectively.

awkward i at EuroSonic 2013

Thursday, Friday and Saturday we will play shows during EuroSonic/Noorderslag 2013.
First show will be on Thursday 10 January at 21.15 at the Energy Stage.
Second show will be a SoLo show with only Djurre playing at 18.00 at the Energy Stage on Friday 11 January 2013.
Good news is that both shows do not require a EuroSonic-ticket, so you can just come by and support us without worrying about spending extra money.

And on Saturday, 12 January 2013, Djurre will also be playing during the award-show of the Ijzeren Podiumdier. Unfortunately this award-show is only on invitation.

Anyhow, see you somewhere in Groningen. Either at the Energy Stage or somewhere on the streets, when passing by!

Djurre de Haan meets Hank Williams

The Day Hank Williams Died
Whilst we are busy preparing our gigs at EuroSonic 2013 and arranging the last bits and bobs for our tour in Indonesia, here's a something just for your pleasure. On New Year's Day Djurre played a few songs during the Hank Williams Tribute in Paradiso. And if we may believe the press, he delivered an amazing performance:
"Djurre de Haan (awkward i) performed his fantastic own version of Ramblin' Man. With his tough and forceful voice, he made this sons his own and transformed Hank Williams sorrow into a battle song for the wandering man"...
We couldn't find a properly filmed version of Ramblin' Man, so here's Lost Highway:

Djurre meets Beck and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble at De Wereld Draait Door

Last week Djurre and Diederik talked about Song Reader, the new album of Beck. Just descriptions abut them playing Beck, words written down and published in the NRC. No music to hear, no videos to watch. Many of you asked if there was any footage available of Djurre and Diederik playing "Old Shanghai". We had to disappoint each of you. But there is hope! Today's breaking news:
Djurre just returned back to the Netherlands between two shows in Germany and:
Tonight live at DWDD Djurre (awkward i), Marien (Moss) and Roosmarijn Reijmer are talking about Song Reader the new album of Beck. AND for all waiting to HEAR and see; Djurre will be playing "Old Shanghai" with the one and only Nederlands Blazers Ensemble / Netherlands Wind Ensemble live on TV! So, turn on your TV at 19.25 Ned3 and enjoy ...

And to complete the whole story, this is how it sounds when Djurre plays "Old Shanghai" with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble:

awkward i in Dordrecht or how to leave a synth behind and take the wrong suitcase

It was a regular Thursday in November 2012. We played at the Dolhuis in Dordrecht, supported by Jacco Gardner. Great show, great people, great audience, only parking the bus was kind of painful... Conclusion; a good Thursday night in November with the band...

"Let's head back to Amsterdam!"
Satisfied, you start driving.  And then, somewhere between Dordrecht and Amsterdam in the middle of nowhere, you suddenly receive a phone call from Jacco Gardner: "Guys, did you leave your synth in Dordrecht?" As we actually did leave it, Jacco and his band took our synth with them, whilst we were waiting at a lonely petrol station near somewhere for the nightly synth-band-bus-swap to be happening. Time was passing, toilets were used and snacks were bought... And then, just when Jacco was handing over our synth, he received a call from Dordrecht, asking whether they might have mixed up suitcases and taken the wrong suitcase with them. A suitcase filled with microphones of the Dolhuis. Nope, they didn't but we did....

This morning, a little suitcase, filled with microphones made a little trip from Amsterdam, back to Dordrecht, accompanied by Geert de Groot. Geert you are today's hero and probably tomorrow's hero as well, as we do not yet know what we will take or do not take along with us from Cafe de Amer in Amen tonight...

HALLELUJAH ! AMEN!

See you at Amen tonight for more ringing the changes...

And thanks a lot, Jacco Gardner for the cosy little synth-band-bus-swap...

Traditionals Live Tour

Only a few humble days left before we are gathering under the Christmas-tree, singing Christmas-carols, once again. As it still takes more than 45 days before we can “make a joyful noise and let it ring”, we will celebrate other valuable occasions. Occasions, like this year's last project by Paradiso Melkweg Productiehuis, on Saturday 27 October in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam. Murder Ballads will open this special night and after the break Jelle Paulusma, Carol van Dyk, Ro Halfhide, Peter te Bos and of course Djurre de Haan will close the night with a Traditionals Live concert.
In case you are wondering now: “What are Traditionals?”, the answer can be found here... In case you are thinking: “Sounds good, but Iam busy on Saturday”, no worries, In A Cabin With is organizing a whole tour of Traditionals Live concerts during the following weeks, just have a look at our tour-dates.

And maybe, maybe because it's nearly Christmas or maybe due to the spur of the moment and the spirit of the place, Djurre will play a song or two on his ---> --->

awkward i deflowers Singer-songwriter KaFé of Kroepoekfabriek in Vlaardingen

Yesterday, we had a great show in Enschede at The Overload show, thanks to all of you for joining us.
And on Sunday 14 October we will be back on the road again, heading for Vlaardingen, where we are honored with the deflowering of the Singer-songwriter KaFé at the Kroepoekfabriek (quite a lot of deflowering going on recently with awkward i's music ... ).
Anyhow, let's make this a memorable first time...

The deflowering of awkward i's sound-track

A few months ago we spend hours, days and even nights, putting all our energy into composing. Unifying atmospheres, impressions, emotions and moving pictures into soundscapes, into music. The result of all our effort is: The sound-track of the Dutch movie “The Deflowering of Eva van End”, directed by Michiel ten Horn, music by awkward i ... Meanwhile “The Deflowering of Eva van End” had its premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada (by the way, here is a little review). And as it will take until February 2013 before you can watch the movie in the Netherlands, we have prepared a little something for you guys. Call it a pre-view, a pre-taste, a pre-impression, call it the perfect way to start your week-end;
We proudly present you the teaser of “The Deflowering of Eva van End”...

Enjoy, have a great weekend and, as for next week, we will catch you somewhere between Enschede and Vlaardingen ...

Happy Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday to you!
And we got some new tour dates waiting for you...
And there might be a little Germany-tour coming up in December....
Oh, and Djurre will be trying-out some new songs, together on the road with Bettie Serveert .
And today is Wednesday, so happy Wednesday!

awkward i your favorite band ...

And as they say in the Netherlands: "If it is broadcasted on television, it's true." Yep, kind of...
Anyhow, as we made it on Dutch national TV it's time for us to move up to Enschede on 11 October and play a show with The Black Atlantic. To get you into the right mood for this night, Djurre made a little mix tape with songs that inspire him.
And on Sunday 14 October we have the honour to inaugurate the new singer-songwriter cafe at the Kroepoekfabriek  in Vlaardingen with our live show.
And as they say in the UK: "Be there or be square...!"

awkward i under influence

awkwardi has been one of the most frequent acts at Onder Invloed shows over the last years.  From the first time at UROCK Cafe, the two nights in Amsterdam, to Festival aan de Werf and EKKO in Utrecht. Therefore, there have already been a lot of videos of Djurre de Haan at the OnderInvloed website,

but they never did  record an actual session. Earlier this year we decided it was time, so we headed to Cafe Tabac in Amsterdam and filmed a couple of covers...

A day to be remembered ...

Saturday 21 July, the sun was shining and we went to Beverwijk playing two shows at the Young Art Festival, went full of amazement through the magic woods they created there and loved the tiniest stage we played so far in the pipo-truck of De Liedjesfabrique. We went to Utrecht the same night, playing at De Parade and experienced an epic show. In other words, Saturday 21 July, 3 shows on one day, it was a day to be remembered.

Today, we will be heading for Chemnitz in Germany in expectation of our show during the MS Beat Festival on 28 July and we will be back in the Netherlands for Duizel in het Park in Rotterdam and Festival In Vervoering in Utrecht on Sunday 5 August.

See you then, somewhere, somehow and thanks to all of you that made 21 July such a memorable day!

And when the rain begins to fall, we will be your sunshine from Beverwijk to Utrecht

As the summer is hiding behind some heavy clouds of rain, we will try to cheer-up your weekend with “magnificent intro`s combined with gripping poetry & melodic depth; varied, subtle, complex plain gorgeous music”....
Here you can already pre-taste 1% awkward i (thanks to Sizzer Amsterdam), the full 100% can be consumed this Saturday during the Young Art Festival in Beverwijk and at De Parade in Utrecht. Just to be sure that you won't miss us, whilst hiding from the rain, showtime in Beverwijk will be at 5 pm and at 7 pm Djurre will do a solo-show at the Liedjesfabrique-stage, there.
And for all of you living in Utrecht and surroundings – don't fear the rain – we will keep you dry at Cafe Correct at De Parade around 11.30 pm. And that's a promise!
